Understanding Youth Work

Youth Work helps young people learn about themselves. It is underpinned by a clear set of values which include:
• young people choosing to take part
• developing young people’s view of the world
• treating young people with respect
• developing young people’s skills and attitudes
• helping young people make stronger relationships and collective identities
• respecting and valuing differences
• promoting the voice of young people*

*(National Youth Agency Ethical Conduct in Youth Work)

At The Market Place youth workers offer support through the Drop-In service, My Plan and Group work sessions. We offer a safe space to talk about anything going on for you and help you have voice and influence over things that happen in your life and the world around you. All youth work services at the market place are free and confidential.

Drop-In is for young people 13-25 years old. We're open:

  • Tuesday 2.30pm-5.30pm
  • Wednesday 2.30pm-5.30pm
  • Thursday 2.30pm-5.30pm
  • Friday 2.30pm-5.30pm
  • Saturday 2pm-4pm

You don’t need an appointment you can get some immediate support on any issue that is affecting you. We provide a safe space for young people for you to talk about how you are feeling and can give you information about other services that can also help you.

During Drop-In opening times we try and offer every young person 20-30 minutes of support.

You will work one to one with a youth worker in an informal open plan space. Please note if Drop-in is busy you may have to wait to be seen

A Youth Worker from Forward Leeds joins us for drop-in every other week on a Wednesday.

My Plan

For young people aged 11-16 years. It is a regular weekly appointment with a youth worker and support for 8 sessions.

My Plan can support you with anything you are struggling to cope with and gives you some space to work out where you want to be and what you want to do.

My Plan is solution focused support , offering coping strategies and techniques. Young people identify their own issues and together with a youth worker make ‘a plan’ to work through these things to achieve their personal goals.

We don’t work miracles but we do offer good support to help you work out what is going on for you, and to help you improve your life.
