Counselling services at The Market Place
Counselling provides a private and confidential space to talk about anything that is bothering or upsetting you, with someone who will listen and respect you, and who will not judge you.
Counselling offers the time and space to explore all sorts things, such as relationships, events in your life or to help you to be happy with your life and who you are. It also offers the opportunity to help you to understand your life and yourself better.
Sometimes it can be difficult to talk to friends and family, and an independent person can make this easier.
What can you expect:
- Confidentiality and privacy
- To be believed and trusted
- An opportunity to express thoughts and feelings
- Being listened to and respected
- Support to cope with your feelings
How it works:
Your counsellor will accept you and anything you want to talk about, without pretending to be an expert on you.
Talking about yourself and your life can help you see things more clearly. Ideas can be shared and together you and your counsellor can explore the choices and changes that seem right to you. Your counsellor will respect you and also be honest with you.
You will not be told what to do, instead you can talk about what you think, how you feel, and find out what you want for yourself. Mistakes and changing your mind may be part of that and your counsellor will work through those with you for as long as it takes.
If you like, you can use drawing, painting or modelling along with talking and be as creative as you want.

How to make an appointment:
If you are interested in any of our 4 Counselling services and are aged between 13 and 23 years old, you can phone us on 0113 246 1659 to find out more or come to a Drop-In session.
If you are particularly interested in the Fast Access Counselling and Support, then you can also come along to one of our Drop-in Sessions and speak to a worker about this Counselling service. Fast Access Counselling and Support is the only type of Counselling we can offer to 24 and 25 year olds and the main referral route would be via Drop-In.
All of our counsellors are either fully qualified to a minimum of Diploma level, or are currently in the final stages of achieving their qualification. The students that we choose to take, have to successfully complete an interview and induction process so that we are confident that they are now at a level to provide a good standard of Counselling to young people.
Our qualified counsellors and psychotherapists have a vast array of experience.
The Market Place is a member organisation of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) therefore all of our counsellors agree to work within the Ethical Framework of the BACP.
An Intro Session is basically an Introductory Session that we arrange so that you can come and meet one-to-one with a worker, to find out more about The Market Place and the services we offer.
The Intro Session usually lasts about 40-50 minutes and is a chance for us to tell you about our confidentiality policy, as well as offering you the opportunity to tell us a little bit about why you have come, so that we can check that we can meet your expectations with what you are hoping to bring to your sessions, and help you to work out which might be the best part of our service for you.
It’s also where we can check out any other important things we might need to know that will help us to provide the best support to you.
After the Intro Session, you will then be placed on the waiting list for whichever part of the service you have chosen. This will be explained in more detail when you come for the Intro Session.
